Can yous grow beans from stale store-bought beans?
My girl and I did this projection together and accept enjoyed watching our beans sprout. Follow along as we show you how we grew bean shoots from shop-bought dried beans.
Supplies needed
- An assortment of Hurst's HamBeens 15 Edible bean Soup
- Window greenhouse seed starter dome and tray
- Biodegradable peat pots
- Organic starter potting mix
- Spray bottle with water
We purchased a window greenhouse seed starter kit from our local hardware store that came with a plastic tray for starting seeds. Nevertheless, I decided to remove that and replace information technology with biodegradable peat pots. This makes it easier to transplant the bean shoots as they outgrow the dome into larger pots. You lot simply found the peat pots direct into the soil without trying to remove the plant from the plastic containers which can go messy.
Instructions
Use scissors to cutting each individual peat pot from the others. This mode if some beans sprout quicker than others and outgrow the dome you can transplant them easily without disturbing the others. You will run across from the image below that nosotros actually did this after filling them with soil, but just because I didn't think of it right away, it came to me subsequently.
Put a single bean into the heart of each pot and push information technology under the soil just a niggling with your finger.
Cover the beans with soil. Spray each of the peat pots making sure that the soil is damp, but not drowning.
These are the dried beans that we planted (in lodge left to right). We planted two of each so yous tin can run into from the photos how quickly some of the beans have grown compared to others.
- Northern Beans
- Pinto Beans
- Big Lima Beans
- Garbanzo Beans
- Cranberry Beans
- Black Beans
- Pink Beans
- Kidney Beans
Note: The merely varieties in the packet that won't sprout are the light-green and xanthous split peas.
Put the dome over your tray and place it in front of a window that gets natural light and sun. The best spot for ours is on our bedroom windowsill that gets afternoon sunlight.
